A new album by Smoke DZA called Money For Dummies was just released, and it has a variety of standout tracks and appeals to a wide audience. What Would Push Do, however, was one of the album’s most direct and emotional moments?
Fans of DZA may also anticipate an even greater combination of fluid flows, hazy orchestration, and a more traditional-sounding beat. Though this music is undeniably unpleasant, the 38-year-old still has some tricks up his sleeve.
First of all, the song’s title may initially raise some questions. It alludes to Pusha T’s song “What Would Meek Do?” from his lauded 2018 album DAYTONA. The music not only has a comparable rhythm, speed, and swing, but DZA also has a similar delivery to Push. Smoke’s voice also has a horrible rasp on this track, to the point where one half-expects Push to break out in a “Yuuugh!”

Even yet, the blatant parody doesn’t go too far into rip-off land. One difference is that DZA’s lyrical style is a touch more expansive and diverse. The actual instrumental comes next. The tremendous drop of “Today, we selling’ bass” emphasises the chorus. Additionally, in this track, the bass feels almost too much, which isn’t something that can be said with a lot of his prior 2022 work.
Furthermore, “What Would Push Do” on Money For Dummies is the exception rather than the rule. More wavy cannabis songs, drumless street tales, and soulful boom-bap are included. Fans wouldn’t mind seeing this sound explored and extended, though, given DZA’s skill set.
